EPA Funds Energy Efficiency Program in Philadelphia School District Through $80,000 Grant

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today presented an $80,000 grant to the Alliance to Save Energy that will help fund an expansion of its school energy efficiency program in the Philadelphia School District.

The presentation took place at Frankford High School, located in Philadelphia’s Frankford section, because that school’s building, engineering and maintenance program has received assistance from the Alliance to Save Energy and students have taken an active, hands-on role in saving energy. Students in this facility’s training program are responsible for making sure that lights are turned off when classrooms are not in use, that windows are closed when the air conditioning or heating is on, and for checking and repairing leaky faucets.

Through its Green Schools program, the Alliance to Save Energy has worked with the Philadelphia School District since 1996 to improve energy efficiency by designing math and science curriculums, providing training for teachers, building engineers and administrators, and funding equipment and supplies. During the past two years, the program, which is customized for each school, has successfully saved energy, trained teachers, and contributed to student learning in 27 schools.

“Working with the City of Philadelphia School District, the Alliance to Save Energy helps city schools identify and implement energy efficient action items they can do to help improve our environment. And Frankford High School has played an important role in helping implement that program,” said Donald S. Welsh, EPA Regional Administrator for the mid-Atlantic Region.

This grant will fund training for an additional 16 to 20 teachers, eight to 10 building engineers and eight to 20 administrators.
