EPA CITES PALMERTON MAN FOR FILLING WETLANDS WITHOUT A PERMIT

PALMERTON, Pa. - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announed that it has cited landowner Anthony Sander of Palmerton, Pa., for filling in protected wetlands in Monroe County, Pa.

In the administrative complaint, EPA alleges that Mr. Sander violated the Clean Water Act by filling in approximately one tenth of an acre of wetlands at the El-do Lake Subdivision without the required permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Under the Clean Water Act, a Corps of Engineers permit is required to discharge dredged or fill material into wetlands areas.  The permit requirement is designed to minimize the destruction of wetlands.  

EPA seeks a $16,500 penalty for this violation.  Mr. Sander has the right to a hearing to contest the alleged violations and proposed penalties.  

Wetlands serve a number of critical environmental and economic functions, including flood control, water filtration, and wildlife.
