(Boston, Mass. – July 16, 2008) – Over the course of the summer, EPA will begin a full-scale clean up of the remaining contaminated soil and groundwater at the Ottati and Goss/Great Lakes Container Corp. Superfund Site in Kingston, N.H.
EPA will employ a clean up technology called “In-Situ Chemical Oxidation,” a method where a chemical oxidant is injected into the saturated subsurface to reduce the amount of organic contaminants. EPA anticipates that this work will begin in late July and be completed before the end of Sept. 2008. Additional injections of the oxidant are planned for the summers of 2009 and 2010.
Sampling activities, installation of wells that will be used to monitor the performance of the injections, and other site preparation activities are already underway. EPA will monitor groundwater and surface water during and after the injections and use the results to determine whether further injections will be needed to achieve the cleanup goals for the Site.
The approximate 58 acre site is a former steel drum recycling and reconditioning facility located approximately 3 miles south of the center of Kingston, NH. The facility’s operations included rinsing drums and disposal of the rinse water on site. The facility operated from the late 1950s until approximately 1980.
