CHICAGO (Sept. 22, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with Intrametco Processing Inc. on alleged clean-air violations at the company's aluminum recovery plant at 1901 W. Louisiana St., Evansville, Ind. EPA assessed a $42,500 penalty.
The agreement resolves EPA allegations that, during testing, Intrametco released almost 60 times the amount of dioxins and furans allowed by federal regulations. In addition, EPA alleged that the company had failed to meet the federal deadline for demonstrating compliance with dioxin and furan emissions limits.
Intrametco has certified that it is fully complying with EPA emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants emitted by secondary aluminum processing plants.
There is evidence that dioxins may cause liver damage and probably cause cancer in humans, and furans may cause cancer in humans.
