(Seattle, WA - May 15, 2006) – Thirteen projects across Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington have been selected to receive a total of $2.7 million in the latest round of federal aid made available by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s national “Brownfields” redevelopment initiative. EPA is awarding $69.9 million nationwide to support Brownfields cleanup and redevelopment.
According to Michael Bogert, EPA regional administrator in Seattle, the Brownfields Program is a locally-based environmental protection initiative that creates strong public-private partnerships, promotes innovation, and encourages creative land reuse.
“By using Brownfields program funding to leverage redevelopment, EPA partners with public and private entities to revitalize blighted properties and move them back into productive use,” said Bogert. “By empowering state and local redevelopment officials to generate and oversee Brownfields activities, we promote a collaborative approach that ensures that local solutions are used to solve local problems.”
