EPA Completes Hazardous Substances Removal at Med Waste of Alabama Site in Decatur, Ala.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it has completed a Superfund hazardous substances removal at the Med Waste of Alabama site in Decatur, Morgan County, AL. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal was completed under the authority and direction of the Agency's Emergency Response and Removal Branch.
The removal included: securing the perimeter fence and buildings collection; the decontamination and disposal of bagged waste and containers; and the removal and disposal of contaminated soil. The site consists of 1.2 acres and is located in an industrial area on 807 N. Market Street in Northeast Decatur. The site is owned by Med Waste of Alabama and was used for treatment and disposal of medical waste. The site was referred to EPA by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. The site is not on the National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare, or the environment. The Administrative Record for the site is available for public review. The Administrative Record file includes documents that form the basis for selection of the removal action. Documents in the record may include but are not limited to preliminary assessment and inspection reports, test results, and the Action Memorandum.
