TEXAS MAN ARRESTED ON BRIBERY CHARGES
On Jan. 29, David H. Mead was arrested in Houston, Texas, on charges of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and Racketeering. Mead was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Saybolt Inc., now Core Laboratories, a firm that tests bulk commodities, including gasoline and other petrochemical products. Mead is alleged to have instructed one of his subordinates to pay a
$50,000 bribe to a Panamanian government official for the purpose of acquiring concessions from the Panamanian Government including substantial tax breaks, a license for a new business and a prime location along the Panama Canal. The allegations of bribery came to light during an investigation of alleged data falsification at Saybolt’s Wolburn, Mass., laboratory facilities. Mead’s arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the EPA’s Boston Office and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center.
