MEDIA ADVISORY
ADMINISTRATOR BROWNER TO JOIN SENATORS SARBANES AND MIKULSKI TO ANNOUNCE SAFE DRINKING WATER FUNDS FOR MARYLAND COMMUNITIES

U.S. EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will join U.S. Senators Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 2:30 p.m. in Rockville, Md. to announce funding for six Maryland communities to upgrade their drinking water systems and provide safe drinking water.
In 1996, President Clinton signed a new Safe Drinking Water Act to provide strengthened protections and resources to help communities provide clean drinking water -- improvements that the Clinton Administration had called for since September 1993, when the Administration first proposed key reforms to the Safe Drinking Water Act. This new law included a first-ever Safe Drinking Water Loan Fund to provide communities across the country with the resources to upgrade systems and improve the quality of their drinking water. In FY97, Maryland received over $17 million to upgrade local drinking water systems, and is expected to receive an additional $8 million in FY98.
