AUDIT OF 1996 TSCA CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS INFORMATION CENTER COMPLETE
Results of a 1996 audit that was recently completed for EPA’s Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances (OPPTS) indicate that four documents collected by the Confidential Business Information Center could not be accounted for during the second half of the year. Approximately 44,000 documents were processed during this time. The 1996 audit was conducted shortly after OPPTS initiated a series of reforms to improve the process for handling and filing documents claimed as Confidential Business Information (CBI) under the Toxic Substances Control Act. The reforms began in April 1996 after OPPTS received results for earlier audits conducted from October 1993 through June 1996 showing that approximately 300 CBI documents could not be accounted for due to internal administrative and procedural errors. OPPTS is continuing to review every aspect of its management and processing of confidential information and is working to ensure the accountability of every CBI document it receives.
