EPA SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT ON THE PROPOSED PLAN AT THE DURACELL/BATTERY TECH SUPERFUND SITE IN LEXINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting on Thursday, July 29, 1999, in Lexington, North Carolina, regarding alternatives for treating soil contamination at the Duracell/Battery Tech Superfund site, OU1. Treatment of groundwater contamination at OU2 will be addressed later this year.

The meeting will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Agricultural Center, 301 East Center Street in Lexington. Officials from EPA will discuss the alternatives to treat contaminated soil and respond to questions and concerns from the public. All interested persons are encouraged to attend the meeting. The public comment period began on July 23, 1999 and will extend until midnight August 23, 1999. Oral comments may be given at the meeting. Written comments must be postmarked no later than the ending date and should be addressed to Diane Barrett, Community Involvement Coordinator, U.S. EPA Region 4, 11th Floor, 61 Forsyth St., S.W., Atlanta, Georgia 30303.

The Duracell/Battery Tech site is an active battery manufacturing facility located at 305 New Highway 64 East on 26.5-acres. Based upon the extent of contamination, the site has been divided into two OUs for more efficient handling and cleanup. Both areas were used for the disposal of pesticide products. Contaminants of concern include mercury, cadmium, chromium, and volatile organic compounds.
