Downingtown Schools Receives $4,820 Environmental Grant to Support Watershed Learning Center

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. -- The Downingtown Area School District has received a $4,820 environmental education grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for teacher and volunteer training at the Beaver Creek Elementary School, in Chester County.

The funding will be used to train teachers and volunteers in a naturalistic setting at the Watershed Learning Center that is adjacent to the elementary school. These teachers and volunteers will then develop learning programs at the center for the about 500 students in grades kindergarten through fifth at Beaver Creek Elementary.

“This training program will help provide students with an increased understanding and concern for the environment, and teach them about the effects of human behavior on ecosystems,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. This was one of six grants totaling more than $42,000 awarded in Pennsylvania. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
