ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINES SENTENCED

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., (RCCL) was sentenced on Sept. 17, to pay a $1 million fine by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in Miami. RCCL was also placed on five years probation, during which periodic reports will be made to the court and the government detailing the company’s environmental compliance. These reports are to include the results of independent audits. RCCL previously pleaded guilty on June 2 to presenting a falsified Oil Record Book to the Coast Guard after an oil release from the cruise ship Nordic Empress caused a seven mile oil slick in 1993. In addition, RCCL has also agreed to pay a $8 million fine to the U.S. District Court in Puerto Rico for obstructing justice by destroying evidence related to the illegal discharge of oil from the cruise ship Sovereign of the Seas in 1994. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Coast Guard, the FBI, the Military Sealift Command and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
