EPA awards $1.9 million grant for Lincoln Township sewage treatment project

PHILADELPHIA -- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a
$1,935,700 grant for construction of a new sewage collection and treatment system for the villages of Sipesville and Quecreek in Lincoln Township, Somerset County, Pa.

The proposed project will benefit health and safety in the service area by eliminating malfunctioning on-lot systems and direct sewage discharges from homes into the streets. Currently, untreated sanitary sewage flows to the ground surface and into the Quemahoning Creek. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2003.

“This project will eliminate problems with raw sewage discharges, and provide the Sipesville area with a healthier environment and better quality of life,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The grant will reimburse the Authority for 55 percent of the project’s costs. The balance of the project is being funded with local funds.
