EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING THE JOHNSON CONTROLS, INC. GLOBE BATTERY DIVISION SITE IN WALKERTOWN, NORTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting regarding the Superfund investigation at the Johnson Controls, Inc. Globe Battery Division site in Walkertown, North Carolina on Tuesday, March 26, 2002. Officials from EPA will present the results of the investigation and EPA's preferred cleanup option. According to the terms of an Administrative Order, the investigation was conducted by EPA, the State of North Carolina, and Johnson Controls to identify the nature and extent of contamination at the site.

The public meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. in meeting room 2A downstairs at the Kernersville Public Library, 130 E. Mountain Street in Walkertown. All interested persons are encouraged to attend.

Since 1978, the Johnson Controls site has been used to manufacture batteries. Over the years, releases of hazardous substances into the soil around the facility's main buildings and into their sedimentation basins have been reported.
