Scituate, R.I. School Selected by EPA for Nearly $15,000 Environmental Education Grant

(Boston, Mass. – July 18, 2008) – Schools in Scituate, R.I. were recently awarded a $14,895 environmental education grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Scituate School Department, which received the grant, will use the funds to train teachers and students in 11th and 12th grade in the use of state-of-the-art mapping technologies.

With this grant money, students will learn to use both Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geological Information Systems (GIS) for mapping a variety of environmental parameters in the community – including invasive species, non-point pollution sources and water quality monitoring stations that are regularly monitored by students. Participants will learn about threats to the natural resources and generate management plans as solutions.

This grant was among nine environmental education grants totaling $189,000 chosen this year by EPA’s New England office from among 65 applicants. These grants fund projects that focus on improving teaching skills for educators, typically through workshops; educating teachers, students or the public about the environment and potential health problems stemming from environmental pollution; helping states or communities to develop and deliver environmental education programs; or promoting environmental careers among students.
