LUCENT AND MOLEX XL PROJECTS LAUNCHED
EPA is announcing two new agreements under Project XL to implement innovative environmental programs of Lucent Technologies Inc. and Molex Inc. EPA’s Project XL, which stands for “eXcellence and Leadership,” is a national initiative that tests innovative ways of achieving better and more cost-effective public health and environmental protection, with the expectation that what is learned from the projects will be used to assist EPA in redesigning regulatory and policy-settng approaches. Based on its state-of-the-art Environmental Management System (EMS), Lucent will use that system to achieve continual pollution reduction and simplified permitting, record keeping and reporting requirements with the intention of implementing its EMS in its four U.S. facilities. The approach will begin at Lucent’s plant in Allentown, Pa. The XL Project with Molex provides flexibility to the company in managing its waste sludges containing nickel, copper and tin/lead. Two key environmental benefits will be: substantial toxicity reduction in the water which carries waste sludges to the publicly owned treatment works, and increased recycling of sludge, thereby reducing the amount of materials that would otherwise be disposed. The project will be initiated at the Molex plant in Lincoln, Neb. More information about these projects and Project XL is available through three sources: on the Internet at: https://www.epa.gov/ProjectXL, by fax-on-demand at 202-260-8590 and on a phone information line at 202-260-5754.
