AUDIT OF 1997 TSCA CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS CENTER COMPLETE
EPA continues to make progress in its efforts to successfully ensure accountability of all Confidential Business Information (CBI) in its Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT), according to the Agency’s latest audit. That audit, completed for the period between last January through September, shows that of 47,000 documents processed by the Confidential Business Information Center during that time, only three could not be accounted for. Also as a part of Agency efforts to enhance security, EPA has completed a review of the past five years of CBI documents logged outside the Center to authorized OPPT personnel. That review shows that out of about 150,000 transactions, approximately 129 documents could not be accounted for. The Agency believes that all of these cases can be attributed to record keeping errors. As part of its ongoing security measures for CBI, which include inspections of documents logged out to authorized Agency personnel outside OPPT and annual clearance for staff, OPPT has identified an additional 45 documents that cannot be accounted for during 1997. The Agency believes that there has been no intentional disclosure of CBI in any of these cases. EPA will continue these efforts to ensure its goal of full accountability and security for all confidential information. EPA routinely notifies appropriate companies regarding any unaccounted for document.
