Regional Administrator To Clean Schuylkill Down Below

PHILADELPHIA -- When it comes to protecting the environment, Bradley Campbell, the EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator, will plumb the depths to set a good example.

Campbell will scuba dive into the Schuylkill River tomorrow to remove submerged debris as part of his agency’s contribution to Earth Week.

The EPA is removing river debris in partnership with the Philadelphia Scuba and Aquatics Club, Fairmount Park Commission, Philadelphia Water Department and others. The Earth Week project, called Operation Clean Below, is being repeated for the third year.

Campbell, a certified scuba diver, will lead a contingent of 25 EPA employees participating in Operation Clean Below. He will enter the river at 10:00 a.m. along Kelly and Aquarium drives behind Lloyd Hall.

A native of Philadelphia, Campbell has been regional administrator here since December, and previously worked at the White House Council on Environmental Quality in Washington D.C.
Operation Clean Below is the annual Earth Day cleanup of the Schuylkill River. This year’s goal is to mobilize 300 volunteers to remove eight tons of trash and debris from the river, along the riverbank and on Lemon Hill.

Volunteers also will monitor water quality, offer workshops on watershed protection, and assess watershed conditions as part of the Delaware River Basin Snapshot 2000.
