EPA schedules three neighborhood meetings for South Minneapolis soil contamination site

CHICAGO (May. 19, 2006) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has scheduled three open house-style neighborhood meetings to answer questions and update residents about the ongoing South Minneapolis Soil Contamination sampling and cleanup project.
Meetings will be held
- Wednesday, May 24, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Mathews Recreation Center, 2318 28th Avenue S.;
- Wednesday, May 31, YWCA, 2121 Lake Street E., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.; and
- Wednesday, June 7, Powderhorn Park, 3400 15th Avenue S., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
EPA is comprehensively mapping airborne arsenic contamination from the former CMC Heartland Lite Yard at the intersection of Hiawatha Avenue and 28th Street. The facility produced pesticides from 1939 to 1963. More than 3,000 yards will be sampled during 2006 at no cost to residents.
