(DALLAS – Oct. 1, 2010) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $450,000 to the New Mexico Environment Department. The funds will be used to assist Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) implementation issues. The grant will promote and stimulate enforcement, facility inspections, corrective actions, state authorizations, program management and provide program information.
RCRA was created to conserve and recover land resources. Through RCRA authorities control hazardous waste from "cradle-to-grave" (including generation, transport, treatment, storage and disposal). RCRA also covers the management of non-hazardous wastes. Ground water a semi-nonrenewable resource which is in relatively high demand (up to 50% of drinking water), limited supply, and is vulnerable to pollution from both legal and illicit disposal of hazardous chemicals.
