STATEMENT BY CAROL M. BROWNER
INTRODUCTION OF SENATE BROWNFIELDS LEGISLATION
June 8, 2000
The Clinton-Gore Administration has long been committed to the passage of Brownfields legislation, since it created the first federal Brownfields program in 1994. We commend the efforts of the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on the introduction of this bi-partisan bill. In the last six years, the Brownfields program has spurred economic development and helped revitalize thousands of communities, restoring idle, contaminated land to productive use. Today, all 50 states participate in the Administration’s program, creating thousands of new jobs and leveraging millions of dollars in public-private funding. Strong, protective Brownfields legislation will be an important addition to our efforts. We look forward to working with the Congress to ensure the passage of Brownfields legislation that meets the needs of the communities where the Brownfields are located and continues to protect public health and the environment.
