EPA SUPERFUND REMOVAL UNDERWAY AT THE WAYSIDE FARMS SITE, BISHOPVILLE, LEE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that a Superfund hazardous substance removal is underway at the Wayside Farms site in Bishopville, Lee County, South Carolina. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal began April 12, 1999 and is taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB).

The removal will include:

restricting access to the facility;

excavating, and temporarily stockpiling contaminated soil;

conducting treatment and/or disposal of waste; and

restoration of the site (including backfill, grade, and revegetation).



The removal is expected to be completed by October 1999.

The Wayside Farms site is located in a residential/agricultural area. The EPA was contacted by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) for site assessment and possible removal action. Improperly dumped pesticide waste and containers utilized for aerial spray applications are located on the site. Contaminants of concern include toxaphene, endrin, and DDT.
