EPA to Honor Rhode Island Students on May 27 for Environmental Art and Poetry

BOSTON – More than 75 children from Rhode Island elementary schools will be receiving US EPA Paul G. Keough Earth Artist awards at a celebration on Tuesday, May 27, at the Roger Williams Park Casino in Providence, RI. Students from around New England participated n the annual Earth Artist contest to demonstrate their knowledge of and commitment to a clean environment. The ceremony will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at the Roger Williams Park Casino.

"These young artists, working with their teachers, created artwork for EPA New England's 31st annual Paul G. Keough Earth Artist contest," said EPA New England's regional administrator Robert W. Varney. "They have shown us that they have a good understanding about the environmental challenges we all face, and help us to remember how we can all make a difference in creating a cleaner world. We should all honor these students and their teachers who may well be tomorrow's environmental leaders."

Rhode Island winners of the Earth Artist contest will be recognized at the ceremony where their art and poetry will be displayed. Students will receive certificates for their accomplishments.

The Earth Artists program requires that teachers use class time to talk about environmental issues. The students are encouraged to submit either a poem or poster to EPA New England that demonstrates their knowledge. Children from kindergarten through sixth grade are eligible to participate. All submissions are judged by a panel of EPA staff.
