STATEMENT OF U.S. EPA ADMINISTRATOR CAROL M. BROWNER
ON THE PASSING OF
MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS
MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS
5/14/98
The name Marjory Stoneman Douglas is synonymous with the magnificence of the Florida Everglades. She represents the efforts of so many to restore and protect that distinctly American and priceless natural wonder. Her efforts to bring attention to the Everglades helped spur a movement nationwide to protect all of America's great treasures. As one who was lucky enough to grow up in Florida near the Everglades, I always will be indebted to her vision, her dedication and her courage. In tribute to Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ inspirational life and leadership, we must all remain vigilant to ensure that the heart of our beloved "River of Grass" will once again pulse with water.
