EPA FORMALLY PROPOSES CENTREDALE MANOR RESTORATION PROJECT TO SUPERFUND LIST

Release Date: 11/05/1999
Contact Information: Peyton Fleming, EPA Press Office (617-918-1008)

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed the Centredale Manor Restoration Project located on Smith Street in North Providence, as well as the Woonasquatucket River and flood plain between Route 44 downstream to and inclusive of Allendale Dam, to the EPA's National Priorities List (NPL). The NPL, also known as Superfund, is EPA's list of the country's most serious uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites identified for possible long-term cleanup. Superfund makes public funds available to cleanup toxic waste sites when private financing is unavailable.

EPA has already begun taking steps to eliminate exposure to contaminated soils by fencing and capping affected areas. The agency has also posted no fishing signs. Investigations are currently being conducted to determine the extent of contamination in sediments, soils and surface water.

"This is the next big step in addressing contamination at this site and in the long-term restoration of the Woonasquatucket River," said John P. DeVillars EPA's New England Administrator. "With support from the community and Governor Lincoln Almond, we will continue to do whatever it takes to address the public health and environmental risks presented by this project."

Proposing the site to the NPL opens a 60-day comment period, during which time the public has an opportunity to offer comment and opinion on the listing. Comments must be submitted in writing by December 21, 1999 to:
