IDAHO MAN SENTENCED ON HAZARDOUS WASTE CHARGES
On April 6, Steven K. Leslie, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho in Coeur d’Alene to five months in prison, five months home detention, 100 hours of community service and one year of probation for illegally transporting hazardous waste in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. In the fall of 1994, Leslie illegally transported drums of plating solution to two sites on U.S. Forest Service lands and one site on the Bureau of Land Management land in Idaho. Drums containing cyanide and chromic acid plating solutions were found at each of the three sites. Improper exposure to cyanide and chromic acid solutions can cause serious illness and death. Leslie was previously apprehended on Oct. 2, in Alaska where he fled to avoid prosecution. This case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, and the defendant was apprehended with the assistance of Alaska State Troopers.
