SOLUTIA, INC. TO BEGIN SECOND REMOVAL IN ANNISTON, ALABAMA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today, that Solutia, Inc. will begin a PCB removal at 1209 Crawford Avenue, Anniston, Alabama. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal will take place under the authority and direction of the Agency's Emergency Response and Removal Branch. EPA and Solutia, Inc., reached an agreement in October to remove contaminated surface soil from properties where polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations are above 10 parts per million or higher. Properties from which soil is removed will be restored as close as possible to their original condition. Twenty-three properties requiring a removal action have been identified to date. Under the requirements of the agreement, Solutia, Inc., continues to conduct sampling in the area to identify additional properties. The Anniston PCB site consists of residential areas around the Solutia, Inc. (formerly Monsanto) plant in West Anniston where soil and stream sediments are contaminated with PCBs. PCBs were manufactured in Anniston from 1929 to 1971.
