Senior Official Announces Move to State Department

(10/23/03) Claudia A. McMurray, Associate Deputy Administrator and Chief of Staff to the Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), today announced that she will be taking a position as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment at the Department of State, beginning this week.
Stephen Johnson, Acting Deputy Administrator of the EPA, today commended Ms. McMurray, “Claudia has been an indispensable part of the EPA team. Her outstanding contributions to the agency, her leadership, her intelligence and her spirit of dedication have been a role model that many have followed. She has vast experience on a wide range of issues and expertise in the intergovernmental arena, all of which provided valuable assistance to the agency and the Office of the Administrator as we addressed difficult environmental concerns. We will miss her, and wish her all the best.”
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve this Administration, and has been a distinct pleasure to work with EPA’s many dedicated employees to protect public health and the environment,” Ms. McMurray said. “I look forward to continuing my service and my commitment to the environment as I take on new challenges at the Department of State.”
Prior to her appointment to the EPA post, McMurray was a senior policy advisor to three Republican Senators who have served as Committee Chairmen in the United States Senate. In the early nineties, she served as Legislative Counsel to Senator John Warner, current Chair of the Armed Services Committee. From 1991-95 McMurray was Counsel to the Committee on Environment and Public Works, during the period that Senator John Chafee served as both Chairman and Ranking Minority Member. In the mid-nineties, she advised Senator Fred Thompson, former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, on a variety of policy issues.
Earlier in her career, Ms. McMurray also worked at the national law firms of Patton Boggs LLP and Kirkland and Ellis, LLP, and in the White House Counsel’s office during the Reagan Administration.
