PHILADELPHIA — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mid-Atlantic Region is proud to announce its newest Green Community - Monroe County, Pa.

A ceremony recognizing Monroe County is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5 at the Union County planning commissioner’s meeting in the Administrative Center, 1 Quaker Place , Room 203, in Stroudsburg.

"EPA is proud to recognize Monroe County as a Green Community. Monroe is the second Pennsylvania county to join EPA's green community program, creating partnerships to protect local environmental resources," said Donald S. Welsh, mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

A green community has a vision for a healthy future and works toward long-lasting solutions to ensure it. Through partnering and the on-line assistance kit, EPA’s green communities program empowers citizens and community leaders to solve problems and make decisions that integrate the unique environmental, social and economic issues in their own communities.

The on-line green communities assistance kit is the centerpiece of the program. It provides a step-by-step, easy to use framework for analyzing, planning and taking action in a systematic way. The kit has case studies, information and resources which have proven successful in green communities all over the world.

The green communities program is an approach to protect the environment at the local level. By providing tools and information through the web site, forging partnerships, with community-based service providers, and working with a few key communities to ensure the feasibility and usefulness of the program, EPA seeks to support communities who want to become sustainable green communities.
