EPA Announces Environmental Education Funding in D.C.

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced 20 environmental education grants awarded throughout the mid-Atlantic region. In the District of Columbia, EPA awarded $21,232 to the Self Reliance Foundation for its program, Asthma and the Environment: A Bilingual, Interactive Traveling Exhibit.

Asthma is a chronic disease with no cure, and its prevalence among children has been rising steadily for the past 20 years. The goal of this project is to create a bilingual, interactive traveling exhibit that will educate Hispanic children and their parents about environmental asthma triggers and how to control and manage asthma. The project will also seek to educate the target audiences about preventive measures that will minimize exposure to environmental asthma triggers.

“Protecting children and children’s health is an important component of environmental education. We are proud to support this project to help increase understanding about a widespread environmental health challenge – asthma,” said mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh.

Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools and has awarded a total of 1,700 grants. These grass-roots grants fund educational programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
