Public Information Meeting on March 31 for Hows Corner Superfund Site in Plymouth, Maine

(Boston, Mass. – March 20, 2009) – Representatives from EPA and Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection (Maine DEP) will be available on March 31 at a public information meeting to discuss ongoing efforts to clean the Hows Corner Superfund Site in Plymouth, Maine. The public meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. at the Plymouth Grange Hall, 1927 Moosehead Trail in Plymouth.

Maine DEP will discuss a proposal to preserve 700 acres in Plymouth as compensation for natural resource damages at the site. EPA will provide an update of the latest groundwater sampling results, as well as the results of the preliminary indoor air sampling. In addition, EPA and Maine DEP will discuss the anticipated schedule for cleanup activities for the site.

The public is invited to learn more about the proposed compensation plan and hear an update of the site activities and to share their comments with the agencies.

The Hows Corner Superfund Site in Plymouth was a former waste oil storage and transfer facility that operated from 1965 to 1980 in affiliation with the Portland Bangor Waste Oil Company. In 1988 Maine DEP discovered groundwater contamination in a nearby residence, sparking an investigation that lead to construction of a waterline and eventual listing as a Superfund site in 1995.
