Former So Cal landfill site gets $200K for redevelopment

LOS ANGELES -- Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the City of Orange, Calif., celebrate the groundbreaking of Grijalva Park, which is partially funded by two EPA Brownfield grants - a $200,000 assessment grant and a $200,000 clean up grant - to aid in the cleanup and redevelopment of this former industrial property.

In 2001, the EPA awarded the City of Orange a $200,000 Brownfields grant to conduct environmental site assessments at the 27- acre former Grijalva Extension landfill and railroad site. Located in the center of Orange, Grijalva Park will become part of a larger 42 acre community center that will include a gymnasium/sports center, aquatic center, skate park and links to a regional trail system on the Santiago Creek, promoting open space preservation, and a healthy sense of community.

“Grijalva Park is a model of President Bush’s Brownfields legislation - a project that over the next three years will transform a former landfill and asphalt plant into a community center that will provide recreational resources to the residents of the City of Orange,” said Wayne Nastri, administrator of the U.S. EPA’s Pacific Southwest Region. “The EPA’s Brownfields program enables communities to develop idle land into productive community assets.”


The EPA’s Brownfields program encourages the revitalization of America's estimated 450,000 problem properties to productive community use. Since the beginning of the Brownfields program, the EPA has awarded 883 assessment grants totaling $225.4 million, 202 revolving loan fund grants totaling $186.7 million, and 238 cleanup grants totaling $42.7 million.

In addition to industrial and commercial redevelopment, Brownfields projects have included the conversion of industrial waterfronts to river-front parks, landfills to golf courses, rail corridors to recreational trails, and gas stations to housing. EPA's Brownfields assistance has leveraged more than $8.2 billion in private investment, helped create 37,525 jobs and resulted in the assessment of 8,374 properties and the cleanup of 93 properties.
