U.S. EPA SETTLES HAZARDOUS WASTE VIOLATIONS AT JACADS

  (San Francisco)-- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced the signing of a consent agreement and final order with the JACADS facility (Johnston Atoll Chemical Agent Disposal System), on Johnston Island in the south Pacific to settle charges that the disposal facility violated hazardous waste regulations. Under the agreement, JACADS will pay a $91,700 penalty.

     "U.S. EPA demands strict compliance with hazardous waste regulations," said Laura Yoshii, U.S. EPA's deputy director of the hazardous waste management division. "We are pleased that JACADS has responded promptly to settle this matter."

     U.S. EPA cited JACADS for releasing a nerve agent above allowable levels in March 1994. The facility was also cited for improper storage of hazardous wastes.

     Immediately following the release of the nerve agent, JACADS stopped operating for about three months. During that time, U.S. EPA conducted an investigation and identified several corrective measures. The facility is now conducting more extensive air monitoring and treatment which will help prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the future.
