FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1996

EPA AND ICAC COOPERATE IN DEVELOPMENT OF AIR POLLUTION CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES

EPA and the Institute of Clean Air Companies (ICAC) have signed a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) to work together on promising new technologies for controlling air pollutants effectively and economically. The ICAC is a national association of companies that supply stationary source air pollution monitoring and control systems, equipment and services representing 50 suppliers of air pollution control equipment. The joint research will focus on innovative, cost-effective methods for detecting, measuring, preventing, or significantly limiting pollutants released by industrial processes and combustors such as toxic metals, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and acid gases including sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Research will be conducted at EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division in Research Triangle Park, N.C., using state-ofthe -art facilities. The CRADA was developed under the Federal Technology Transfer Act of 1986 (FTTA) authorizing scientists from federal agencies, private industry and universities to collaborate on the development and commercialization of innovative technologies. EPA has signed over 70 CRADAs as part of the FTTA. For further technical information, contact EPA's G. Blair Martin at 919-541-7504 or ICAC's Jeff Smith at 202-457-0911. For information on EPA's FTTA program, call Larry Fradkin at 513-569-7960.
