Boston – The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Justice is now accepting grant applications for environmental justice small grants. The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 22, 2002.

The grants are designed to provide financial assistance to eligible community groups – grassroots organizations, churches, federally-recognized tribal governments or other non-profit groups – that are involved in projects to address environmental justice issues.

Preference will be given to community-based organizations that are working on local solutions to local environmental problems.

The maximum for any one grant is $20,000. The EPA New England Office has $150,000 available for Environmental Justice Small Grants this year. Of that, $50,000 will be available exclusively for Superfund-related projects.

Grants are expected to be awarded in late summer. Four conference calls with EPA grant specialists are planned during January to provide information about this competitive process. The calls will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. on Jan. 3, 10, 17 and 24, 2002. For information on how to join in the conference call, visit EPA's Web site: https://www.epa.gov/region01/cal/index.html#0103

Groups interested in the grant application may also call EPA's Customer Call Center at (888) 372-7341 to request an application packet or to register for a conference call.
