EPA Awards $20,000 grant to D.C. Mentoring Project

PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $20,000 environmental education grant to the National Environmental Education & Training Foundation to support its Washington, D.C. EnvironMentors Project Inner School Academy.

The academy is a two-year environmental science program that prepares students to enter college degree programs and professions in environmental sciences, natural resource management, and watershed protection. The academy is run in partnership with Coolidge Senior High School.

“Through this type of program we can support youngsters from Washington, D.C. who have the enthusiasm and desire to pursue careers that will protect our valuable environmental resources,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The program includes an in-school environmental curriculum, an out-of-school mentoring and career awareness program, workplace-based internships and significant financial college support. It was one of 19 programs to receive an environmental education grant from EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

Since 1992, EPA has provided nearly $3 million annually to local organizations and schools nationwide. These grants fund education programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
