EPA Region 4 Awards 2006 Environmental Education Grants

(ATLANTA – September 14, 2006) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 has awarded 17 grants totaling approximately $187,200 as a result of the 2006 competition for environmental education grants. Additionally, an environmental education grant congressional earmark was awarded to the Crow’s Neck Environmental Education Center at the Northeast Mississippi Community College in the amount of $128,100.

EPA’s environmental education grants, authorized by the National Environmental Education Act (NEEA) of 1990, are awarded to carry-out environmental education projects. The winners were chosen from 95 proposals submitted by organizations and agencies in the eight southeastern states.

The EPA Environmental Education Grants Program is designed to stimulate the development of environmental education projects at the community level by local schools and environmental organizations, and to facilitate environmental education partnerships between governmental agencies, educational institutions, non-profit organizations and the private sector. These projects are intended to motivate the public to be more environmentally conscious and make responsible and balanced decisions to protect the environment.

The following is the list of the 17 grant recipients:

· Duvall County Health Department Environmental Health and Safety Division, Jacksonville, Fla.;
· Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla.;
· Medlock Elementary School, Decatur, Ga.;
· Bibb County Board of Education, Macon, Ga.;
· Lincoln Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc., Elizabethtown, Ky.;
· Ohio River Basin Consortium for Research and Education, Athens, Ohio for workshop to be held at Murray State University in Kentucky;
· Mason County School System Department for Environmental Education, Maysville, Ky.;
· Mississippi’s Lower Delta Partnership, Rolling Fork, Miss.;
· Wake County Government Environmental Services Department, Raleigh, N.C.;
· North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Raleigh, N.C.;
· Clean Air Community Trust, Inc., Asheville, N.C.;
· Resource Depot, Inc., Riviera Beach, Fla.;
· Western Kentucky University Research Foundation, Bowling Green, Ky.;
· Camp Fire USA Central Alabama Council, Birmingham, Ala.;
· Tennessee Aquarium Corporation, Chattanooga, Tenn.;
· University of South Carolina Research Foundation, Columbia, S.C.; and
· University of Central Florida, Orlando, Fla.
