(Dallas, Texas – February 11, 2008) The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $200,000 to the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC). These funds are awarded under the EPA Region 6 Border 2012 Program. Border 2012 is a collaboration of partners at the local, state, and federal levels on both sides of the U.S. and Mexico border whose mission is to protect the environment and public health in the U.S.-Mexico border region, consistent with the principles of sustainable development. BECC will use the funds to assist communities in the Four States Border Region (Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Texas) in developing programs to reduce toxic and hazardous materials, safely use and store these materials, and properly dispose of these wastes. Lessons learned can serve as model programs and projects in other border communities.
