BOSTON – The city of Lebanon, NH, was recently honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with an Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award. The Lebanon Wastewater Treatment Plant was one of two facilities in New Hampshire and seven across New England recognized by EPA New England for outstanding work in operations and maintenance, and a commitment to improving water quality.
EPA New England's annual Operations & Maintenance Excellence Awards were established to recognize the staff of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality through not only outstanding and innovative operation and maintenance, but also continued compliance with permit requirements, effective financial management and on-going operator training. Although smaller facilities such as Lebanon have limited resources, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally.
Kevin Kingston, Lebanon's utility operations group leader, and Donald Schagen, wastewater treatment team leader, accepted the award on behalf of the city and the wastewater treatment facility staff at the annual New England Water Environment Association Conference Jan. 31 in Boston. This facility will be considered as a nominee for a national EPA award later this year.
"We commend the entire staff of the Lebanon Wastewater Treatment Facility for their dedication and hard work in the on-going effort required to improve water quality in the Connecticut River," said Ira Leighton, acting regional administrator of EPA's New England Office.
The town of Lisbon was honored by EPA New England as having the ‘most improved" wastewater treatment facility in the region. In addition, the Operations Section of the Wastewater Engineering Bureau of the NH Department of Environmental Services was recognized for outstanding efforts in providing technical assistance to Lisbon.
