Denver -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that Transportation Solutions in Denver and Nichols Partnership, Inc., in Boulder were jointly awarded the Agency's Clean Air Excellence Award for their efforts and progress in achieving cleaner air. The companies were chosen from among 116 applicants nationwide to receive one of 12 Clean Air Excellence awards.
Transportation Solutions began working with the Nichols Partnership, Inc., to develop a creative way to mitigate the traffic impact of a large-scale redevelopment project that would generate more than a thousand jobs and millions of vehicle miles in the already congested Cherry Creek area in Denver. The result was The Cherry Creek Bike Rack, the first of its kind "urban transportation center" in Colorado.

The Bike Rack project is estimated to generate a reduction of 6,505 vehicle miles traveled daily; a total of more than two million VMT saved every year. This VMT savings will correspond to a reduction of 245 pounds of pollution every day -- almost 100,000 pounds of pollutants eliminated annually.

The Bike Rack opened in June 2004 in a 1,000 square foot storefront space at 171 Detroit Street. It offers secure, indoor, free of charge bicycle parking and provides bicycle and other transportation information for employees, residents and visitors while serving the needs of the neighborhood's growing bicycle community.

The Clean Air Excellence Awards Program is sponsored by EPA's Office of Air and Radiation. Now in its fifth year, the awards program annually recognizes and honors both individuals and organizations that have undertaken the risks of innovation, served as pioneers in their fields and have improved air quality. Each award recipient has either directly or indirectly reduced emissions of criteria pollutants or hazardous/toxic air pollutants.

Transportation Solutions is a nonprofit public-private partnership designed to manage transportation demand by providing and promoting programs to improve accessibility and mobility for the communities of southeast Denver.

The Nichols Partnership, Inc., was established in Boulder in 1993 to pursue development opportunities along the Colorado Front Range.
