CONNECTICUT MANUFACTURER AGREES TO $1 MILLION FINE
Polymetric Inc., a subsidiary of U.S. Filter Corp., agreed to plead guilty and pay a $1 million fine on June 10 in U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut in Hartford. The defendant admitted that it discharged highly acidic waste water into the South Windsor Connecticut sewer system in December 1995. The discharge killed the beneficial bacteria in the local municipal sewage treatment plant, causing untreated sewage and industrial waste to flow into the Connecticut River. The company has also agreed to donate $350,000 to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection for the purchase of park land along the Connecticut River, and reimburse the city of South Windsor $11,000 for costs it incurred. A sentencing hearing will be held on Sept. 1, at which time the court will announce whether it will accept the terms of the proposed plea agreement. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division.
