Maryland Lieutenant Governor Speaks at Environmental Science Center for Black History Month

FORT MEADE, Md. (February 28, 2007) -- Maryland Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown was the guest speaker today for a Black History Month program at the Environmental Science Center at Fort Meade. Brown is the second African American elected lieutenant governor of Maryland.

Brown, a dynamic speaker, highlighted achievements made by African Americans that have benefited all Americans and said, “You have to embrace your past to have a foundation for the future.”

The Black History Month program was sponsored by the Environmental Science Center's African American Cultural Exchange Committee.

At the Environmental Science Center, located in Fort Meade, Md., EPA scientists conduct tests on soil, air and water samples to determine the presence of pollutants and other contaminants. EPA microbiologists test drinking water to ensure its safety. Hospital disinfectants are tested to ensure the validity of their claims, and chemists develop the analytical methods necessary to monitor pesticide residues in food. Science center staff also inspect and investigate manufacturing facilities, hazardous waste sites, and public and private labs.
