MANAGEMENT OF BORDER WASTES
MANAGEMENT OF BORDER WASTES
The United States and Mexico are expanding cooperative efforts in managing waste management facilities in the border region. A binational mechanism will bring about increased consultations and the exchange of transboudary environmental impact information dealing with hazardous and radioactive waste disposal sites and facilities
used for hazardous waste recycling, treatment and/or incineration. The environmental agencies of the two federal governments and their states will share technical information being considered in locating waste management facilities. The information exchange and increased coordination are designed to provide for more comprehensive reviews of proposed facilities and to enhance public confidence in the process. For the first time, the agencies are exchanging published comprehensive lists of hazardous and radioactive waste facilities in the border states of their country. The arrangement complements current domestic efforts of both countries to increase openness in decision-making on environmental and health matters, fulfills recommendations of the U.S. and Mexican Cabinets and the governors of 10 U.S. and Mexican states in the border region, and reinforces the commitment to binational environmental cooperation made under the 1983 LaPaz Agreement and the Border XXI Environmental Framework.
