FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1994
MEDIA ADVISORY
EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will head the U.S. delegation to a meeting held annually to address U.S.-Japan cooperation on environmental protection. The meeting is being held on Nov. 16-18 in Tokyo as part of the 20- year-old Agreement on Cooperation in Environment Protection between the two nations. Browner will be reestablishing a Cabinet-level link with her counterpart in the Japanese government, Minister Sohei Miyashita. The last such meeting was held in Washington in 1989.
"The EPA is demonstrating its commitment to the President's 'Common Agenda' program with Japan," said Browner. "We will exchange views on several environmental issues and, where possible, reach agreement on joint or coordinated action on climate change, technology transfer, use of economic incentives and possible environmental assistance for Russia."
Under the U.S.-Japan agreement, there are currently 14 active projects, each of which has been beneficial to the domestic environmental programs in the two countries. One has been completed and there is a recommendation to continue all of the others. Five new activities have been proposed by the Japanese government.
