PHILADELPHIA (June 14, 2012) -- In a settlement announced today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the former and current owners and operators of Avionics Specialties Inc. in Earlysville, Va., have agreed to investigate discharges of hazardous chemicals into the soil and groundwater at the manufacturing plant and to evaluate alternatives for cleanup of the releases.

The 12-acre facility, located in Albermarle County adjacent to the Charlottesville-Albermarle Airport, manufactured aircraft parts and components. TDY Industries, LLC owned the facility from 1966 to 1992, and Avionics Specialties Inc. has been the owner since 1993. EPA has determined that the discharge of volatile organic compounds, including tetrachloroethylene (TCE), occurred during TDY's ownership.

In a consent order with EPA, TDY Industries has agreed to investigate and evaluate alternatives to address soil and groundwater contamination from chlorinated solvents at and near the facility. The agreement requires TDY to submit to EPA a work plan and description of current facility conditions.

In a separate consent order with EPA, Avionics Specialties Inc. has agreed to cooperate with TDY during its investigation and evaluation of cleanup options. Avionics will also provide access to the site, and continue to monitor and maintain filter systems on nearby residential wells. The filter systems were provided by Avionics to nearby homes due to concern about potential migration of contaminants from the site.
