(10/07/03) As part of the celebration of Children’s Health Month, EPA Acting Administrator Marianne Horinko will join with other agencies to celebrate International Walk-to-School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 8. International Walk-to-School Day gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking. Last year, nearly three million walkers from 28 countries walked to school together for various reasons, all hoping to create communities that are safe places to walk. This year’s celebration will be held in many U.S. cities throughout the nation.

EPA joins the celebration to highlight the air quality benefits of walking to school where school buses are not available.

During Children’s Health Month, EPA will showcase efforts to protect children from environmental harm, including: asthma awareness and prevention; the Tools for Schools Indoor Air Quality Program, a resource to help school officials assess, resolve and prevent indoor air quality problems; and the Clean School Bus Initiative which is a voluntary program designed to reduce harmful diesel exhaust emissions. EPA’s programs protect children where they live, learn and play because it is essential to ensure that the current generation and future generations have a safe and healthy environment.
