LOCAL CHILDREN TO RECEIVE ASTHMA CARE DUE TO
EPA SETTLEMENT WITH S.C. JOHNSON AND SON, INC.
In an agreement with EPA, S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc. recently resolved violations of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) for allegedly selling and distributing an unregistered pesticide, AllerCare™Dust Mite Allergen Spray for Carpet and Upholstery, which was marketed toward asthma and allergy sufferers. Under the agreement, the company will pay a $200,000 civil penalty and provide funding to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America to purchase and staff a Mobile Asthma Clinic (“Breathmobile®”) for specialized and preventative health care to Baltimore’s high-risk, inner-city and underprivileged children. The settlement funds the “Breathmobile®” for one year of diagnosis and treatment at a cost of nearly $700,000. In January, at the urging of EPA, S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc., issued an immediate voluntary recall of the product which contains the active ingredient benzyl benzoate for use in controlling dust mites, a common source of household allergens. The recall was based on consumers reporting medical problems associated with its use. Some of the serious symptoms that have been reported include asthma attacks, respiratory problems, burning sensations and skin irritation. For more information on the recall, visit EPA’s web site at: https://www.epa.gov/pesticides/citizens/recalls.htm.
