EPA ISSUES ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY VERIFICATION STRATEGY
As part of its new program to promote innovative private sector technologies that protect the environment, the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development has published a Verification Strategy. The document describes the goals and basic operating principles used in EPA's Environmental Technology Verification Program (ETV), a program developed to determine the performance characteristics of new technologies to prevent, control and monitor pollution. Started in October 1995 as a pilot program, the goals of ETV are to produce and make available independent and credible performance data on a full range of environmental technologies. The ETV program has focused on establishing third party “verification organizations” that evaluate data on technologies used to characterize and monitor waste sites, prevent industrial pollution, and control drinking water systems, among others. Currently, the ETV program is soliciting for additional verification organizations in three new technology areas: advanced environmental monitoring systems, air pollution control technologies and wet weather flow technologies. Other pilots may be started in 1998. The Verification Strategy is available on the Internet at https://www.epa.gov/etv. To obtain hard copies of the document, contact ORD Publications at 513-569-7562.
