EPA AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR'S NATIONAL BIOLOGICAL SURVEY SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
EPA Assistant Administrator for Research and Development Robert J. Huggett and the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Biological Survey (NBS) Director H. Ronald Pulliam Sept. 30 signed a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration on environmental monitoring and assessment research programs betweeen the two agencies. The Memorandum is the first phase of collaborative activities for the agencies and will form the foundation for more specific agreements in the future. EPA and the NBS will cooperate on the exchange and sharing of ecological, biological, and environmental data; conducting joint research and development activities; developing common, consistent, and scientifically defensible methods, standards, and protocols for assessing ecosystems; and conducting joint field data collection and integrated ecological risk assessments. The Memorandum of Understanding also called for undertaking other research, inventory, mapping, monitoring, and assessment activities of mutual interest. The results of collaborative work will also be jointly published.
