NEWS MEDIA ADVISORY
(Kansas City, Kan., June 7, 2011) - EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks will recognize the City of Springfield, Mo., this week for being selected to receive EPA Brownfields funding for the cleanup of hazardous substances at Jordan Valley West Meadows.
A tour of the targeted property for news media will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8. A formal announcement and news conference will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the west end of the Butler Rosenbury & Partners parking lot, 319 N. Main Avenue.
Nationwide, EPA is providing more than $76 million to clean up and revitalize communities through its Brownfields program. Springfield was among 214 applicants nationwide for Brownfields assessment, cleanup and revolving loan funds.
Through EPA’s Brownfields program, Springfield will be able to turn a vacant contaminated former railyard and eyesore into a natural wetland open space, greenway trails, and restored riparian corridor. This corridor will serve as flood control for the community, and take more than 100 acres and 150 properties out of the floodplain. Funds will also be used for cleanup planning and community outreach.
